I like the idea of flagging stuff as 'suggested content' so that we know what's what. I think that can totally work. As I said to Prop in the private message, the suggestion thread was so that I could also keep really good ideas that people contributed a secret from my players until they were implemented in my games. It would be no good letting them know what horrible fates can befall them ahead fo time right? So either way should work pretty well as far as I'm concerned. I look forward to hearing what ideas people have for my little project and what they submit elsewhere that I can use to create a better game for my players.

Oh, what do you think of the map I uploaded? A keeper or should I try to make something else?

I'm not pressuring, but what if suggestions were flagged in some way, like:

SUGGESTED CONTENT or UNOFFICIAL CONTENT
The content…
END SUGGESTED CONTENT

That way people could see it on the wiki, but your players would know it was part of the wiki and not part of the actual setting? If you liked some content, you could just take the SUGGESTION tags off, change and move it…if you hated it, you could cut it out and put it on a "rejected content" page for other people to use or the author to reclaim?

Again, I'm not pushing, just throwing out ideas. Maybe people would feel more comfortable adding to projects if there was a way to flag their content so authors wouldn't feel abused but people could see and comment on their ideas at the wiki?

Also, thanx for liking some of the ideas. By all means use whatever you want in your campaigns. That's the whole reason I'm posting it.

As for adding things, since I'm still working out a lot of ideas in my own head, I'd prefer that any stuff you want to add be put in the "suggestions" thread first. I'd hate to have you post something that conflicts with something I already have in mind but didn't post yet. I know this kind of goes against the whole wiki ideal, but this way it will cut down on any confusion. I plan on having my players sign up and post their characters when we start and they can check the wiki for background info on the world.

There are a ton of new members, but only a few of us are editing…I encourage everyone to just jump in there and make an edit, don't be shy! If you want to learn things, feel free to create a test page…maybe a small addition to someone's project, so that you'll own the page and won't feel bad if something goes wrong!

Scourwind Valley: Feel free to add pages, locations, etc., and to develop the setting on the wiki pages however you like. Make changes, but try not to retcon anything that was just edited or created without chatting with the author first.

4e House Rules Central: Adding to this wiki is an At Will ability.

I find myself wanting to jump into some of these projects, but don't want to step on any toes!

I'm another fan of Chatty. I'm investigating The Gamer Dome as a way to organize my gaming hacks. Right now I'm hacking Moldvay/Cook/Labyrinth Lord D&D. So far, my hacks have appeared on my blog (and one may appear in Fight On! #2) but they're not in an easy-to-find, searchable format. I was contemplating building a page to hold them, but if y'all have done all the ugly HTML for me, well, I'm lazy enough to jump on the bandwagon. ;)

I also love to peruse other people's work for inspiration, so a site like this is great for wasting time er, I mean, sparking off new ideas or finding new ways of tackling old challenges.

Have you read Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals by Salen and Zimmerman? There is so much great information in that book about game design and theory. I still haven't found a book that beats it as far as a general overview of modern game design.

As for Toby and his wife, not sure. Maybe Jackob is secretly some sort of powerful sorcerer (or a rakshasa or some other planar being who can dominate minds) and he brought Toby there via a sort of geas/mind control. He could have found Toby on one of his yearly outings and figured the kid would be good to replace the previous miller (maybe even before said miller expired). Toby, however is unaware that he was controlled in his decision to come to Scourwind Valley, or perhaps he made a pact with the mysterious Jackob who came to his village and was promised some sort of power for coming there.

Any of that make sense or help you out?

So are Tobby and his wife in on the plot, or are they innocent bystanders - or worse - are Tobby and his wife some sort of echos of the people who've always run the place? Maybe illusions, or ghosts that show up whenever both the miller and his wife are dead. They relive the same life over, and over again.

I don't want it to be a curse. This is, somehow, the way it's supposed to be. But - what happens if the monster is set free? And how do you do that? Kill Jackob?

@Mikko. I really like the idea of a "needs development" or "to do" page. It doesn't have to be initially organized as anything else but a set of bullet points. But it could grow into a table of contents (of sorts) to the project as a whole.

You can check out an existing footnote over at Fallcrest Expansion. If you tagged it with your name before or after the note, then even multiple footnotes could go on a single piece of info without interrupting the text that much. Older questions and such could be deleted as they're answered in later footnotes.

I have been playing D&D for about 30 years now. I also have Dm'd my fair share. :)

I am currently working on my own world and rules set along with my own web site. The progress is VERY slow. I have not near enough time to spend on it but I find working on it a way to stay in touch with the Gamers while going through dry spells form gaming.

It seems like this place might be a good one to stick some of my stuff and to talk about it with other DMs, who can maybe give me some feedback.

The (limited) 4e information I've seen so far hasn't made me enthusiastic, but I do love E6, and Pathfinder is looking very good to me.

Propagandroid invited me to guest blog for him sometimes, though so far I've only done one rant post. Stay tuned for more rants posts from me in the future. He didn't exactly invite me to come to this part of his site, but I don't suppose he'll throw me out. :D

Woot indeed! You're lucky to have the books early, man! I've created a new project for Fallcrest, and I'll participate once I have the books! :)

To start a project:

1. Edit the Sidebar. Copy the syntax already under Open Projects, and when you save that page, click on the link you created. It will take you to a blank page, which you can then save as your project homepage.
2. Edit the Top: NavBar. Go to the SiteMap and find Top Navbar, click on it and edit it to add your project to Open Projects.
3. I'll create a forum as soon as I see it and know what it's called. :)
4. Add content!

Yeah, it looks like Wikidot doesn't have that stub-marking functionality, so for now the asterisks are going to have to do (although creating and linking to stub pages for every asterisk is a great idea! I'll (or someone else) get on that when I get back from an event I'm at today.

I've edited the sidebar and top navbar, as well as created a forum for the project. There's a stub page there now, so have at it! I wouldn't expect too much activity on it until after the books come out next week, but I agree that if you seed it with material it will help attract people to it.

Oh, I didn't add a description of it to the front page. Go ahead and do that if you like.

Fallcrest is the setting provided in the new D&D 4e DM's guide. It has a really nice skeleton of a locale to begin a new campaign around. I would like to start a collaborative project to develop that area (the Nentir Vale) by fleshing out the NPCs, buildings in town, villages, adventure sites, organizations and plot hooks.

If you could create the project, I'll begin populating it with the appropriate amount of detail so that others can start on individual projects. I think if we get a good structure going, a forum post or two on ENWorld will really get some traffic and interest.

My proposal is to go with RAW (rules as written) implied setting to ensure we have a common vision of how the world works. We won't change anything that is provided in the mini-setting, but we'll add to it while striving to keep the "feel" fairly consistent.

Any interest?

I heard about the site on ENWorld. Funny thing, I had just been thinking (minutes before, actually) that I should create a wiki site for theFallcrest "implied setting" area to jointly flesh it out with some people. It isn't often you can run the implied setting for D&D and have it interesting and novel, so for my 4e campaign I am just starting that's my plan. Since I'm one of the lucky 100 people with the early-shipped DM Guides from Buy.com, I've had a chance to look the Fallcrest area over and think it will be a really nice starting point for a POL campaign.

As far as credentials, I'm an "old-timer". First D&D was 1979 and I started DMing my own campaigns in 1980. I switched to GURPS for quite a while (with a smattering of HERO, some homebrew and even a little MERP, God help my soul…) Professionally I'm a just an average joe working a corporate job, but generally enjoying the challenges. I'm 44 and Roleplaying is one of my all-too-numerous hobbies that happens to include my teenage son (so I get 'father credits' for playing…woot!)

I think the wiki is a good way to keep the creative juices flowing in between campaigns, and maybe you'll get some good feedback from the others. Feel free to start a thread here, or to start a project for your new campaign with whatever ideas you *do* have, personal house rules, etc.

But populating it correctly is another story. What I'd like to do is write or find a module that would populate a sidebar with every page displaying a certain tag. That way, any page tagged with Scourwind Valley would show up in the sidebar of all pages tagged with Scourwind Valley.

Maybe someone more experienced with Wikis can help me out with this one. :)

Right now, if you look at Scourwind Valley, you'll see that I've put (*) after any word or phrase I think could use development.
